The light brown-reddish wood tone of apa is reminiscent of steamed beech, but it darkens later. The wood features a matt sheen with a slightly streaked structure. Apa typically has a widely distributed, large porous appearance. This wood is extremely dimensionally stable and hard, some 30 % harder than oak.
